website. These essays reflect my areas of interest. While some
essays refer to specific issues in Oregon, where I live, other
states may be facing similar issues. I hope you find something
that provokes a response, disapproving or not. As can be seen,
some of my opinions have already been proven wrong.
I am a practicing physician by training
and an amateur historian by
avocation. My prejudices will be easy to discern. While I do
look good in a toga, the photo on this page makes me look
better than reality.
When the essays contain data found
elsewhere, they will sometimes be followed by web addresses or
other bibliographic references. The site also contains essays
written by others that complement or improve upon the point of
my own essay.
The few essays published elsewhere are
so noted. Reproduction of these essays requires a statement
that they first appeared in the stated newspapers.
The essays are arranged in chronological
order, with the most recent on top.
